Violinist Elina Vähälä and pianist Paavali Jumppanen form undeniably one of our country's most brilliant chamber music duos. These internationally acclaimed stars bring a generous dose of emotion and charisma, instrumental virtuosity, and profound musical expression to the stage. The program the duo has chosen for the concert draws an emotional arc from nostalgia to a bright joy of life. Vähälä and Jumppanen are inspired by music’s ability to reflect life through deeper meanings, and precisely for the Urkuyö ja Aaria (Organ Night and Aria) festival, they have chosen to perform works that are rooted in song.

Brahms’s First Violin Sonata earned its nickname “Regenlied” (Rain Song) after the composer’s song of the same name. The song's melodies and textual themes are present in the various movements of the sonata, most intimately in the finale. Manuel de Falla’s Suite Populaire Espagnole is a captivating arrangement of a cycle of traditional folk songs, which the composer created with the assistance of master violinist Paweł Kochański. Meanwhile, the core of Schubert’s Fantasy—considered one of the most challenging works in the duo repertoire—is dominated by variations based on the theme of the composer's song Sei mir gegrüsst! (I Greet You!).

This concert marks the highly sought-after duo's only joint performance in their home country this year!
