The natural elements – earth, water, air and fire – form the themes of this concert, which presents orchestral suites and concertos by some of the most famous masters of the Baroque era. The atmospheres of Bach, Vivaldi and Telemann move between grounded calm, enchanting currents, icy frost and burning intensity.

Air is represented by Bach’s beloved Orchestral Suite No. 2 in B minor (BWV 1067), where the flute takes on a prominent solo role. Vivaldi’s Bassoon Concerto in G major (RV 493) brings the listener back to earth. Water is evoked through Telemann’s Water Music (TWV 55:C3). This French-style orchestral suite is known by many names: Hamburger Ebb und Fluth, Musica marittima and the Water Overture. Fire is represented by Bach’s Violin Concerto No. 2 in E major (BWV 1042), believed to date from the composer’s years in Weimar. This warmly spirited classic is full of passion, virtuosity and joyful energy.
