INTRODUCTION:
This concert transports the audience to the authentic atmosphere of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with music by three central composers of Viennese Classicism performed on period instruments. The Italian-born Luigi Boccherini settled in Madrid early in his career but worked and absorbed influences in Vienna beforehand. Mozart and Beethoven were master pianists, while Boccherini was a virtuoso cellist.
Between 1809 and 1820, Beethoven composed a vast number of folk song arrangements with piano trio accompaniment for the Scottish publisher George Thomson. From this extensive collection of Scottish, Irish and Welsh songs, tenor Tuomas Katajala has selected xx for this concert. The evening concludes with Beethoven’s celebrated “Archduke” Trio, dedicated to his pupil and patron Archduke Rudolf of Habsburg. In Olari Church, musicians deeply versed in Classical style create an intimate chamber music atmosphere.
